Chapter Eleven
âHello?â Astrid should have let the phone ring through to her voice mail, but she was still half-asleep when she answered.
âAstrid, honey? I was just calling to see what youâve been up to. It seems like I havenât talked to you in a while.â Astrid let out a silent groan. It was her mother calling first thing in the morning. She loved her parents, they were amazing, loving people, but they could also be a bit much.
âHey, Mom. Whatâs up?â She should climb out of bed and head to the kitchen because this conversation would need some caffeine. Although, she much preferred the coffee at Parkerâs. Just the thought of him had a grin breaking out on her face. Suddenly, she realized her mom had become silent on the other end of the line.
âIâm sorry, Mom. What?â
âI asked whatâs been keeping you so busy. Are classes that hard?â
âNot really. I did pick up a job working as a server for the summer.â
âReally? Where?â
âItâs this quaint little place called Donnellyâs. The owner became ill, so his son is running it for now.â She hoped her mother couldnât hear the grin on her face. âI really like it. I only work weekends and game nights. Theyâre all really nice. Iâm on for tonight again, as a matter of fact.â
She left out the part about it being a bar. She also left out that she had fallen for the ownerâs son. There was silence on the other end of the line.
âIs it safe? What time do you get home?â her mother finally asked.
âDonât worry. Parker always brings me home when itâs late.â Shit. That was the wrong thing to say. She smacked her forehead with her hand. How could she be that stupid? Her mother could sniff out half-truths from a universe away.
âWhoâs Parker?â Damn it.
âHeâs the ownerâs son. Itâs just a ride, Mom.â She didnât add that if she has her way, itâs about to become a whole lot more.
âHmm, I donât know. Iâll speak to your father about you working there. Iâm not so sure I like it.â Double shit. She was twenty-one for Christâs sake. She should be allowed to work where she wanted.
Her father was more pragmatic than her mom, but she didnât like the idea of him analyzing her work environment any better. Sheâd just have to distract her mom with the hope sheâd forget it.
âSo, Mom, whatâs the plan for the fourth?â That did the job. Her mom rambled on about what her dad planned on grilling, who was coming, and what decorations were going on the house.
Astrid grew up in a picture-perfect home in the suburbs. The home sat on half an acre with large sweeping lawns, trees that provided ample shade, and an ambling driveway to the front door.
Her father was an architect at a prestigious firm in the city. Though they didnât have quite the wealth that Deanâs family did, she still grew up comfortable. In school, she had excelled in class, was a cheerleader, and was on the Model UN team.
